'Off The Cuff' Poem by NiQi Deveaux

'Off The Cuff'

A challenge issued off the cuff
What am I gonna say?
I've got so many thoughts
I could write a million ways

What can I talk about?
Really? Just about anything
I could talk of romance lost
Or amazing wondrous things

I could talk about a flower
Or making things brand new
Or the clouds that float across the sky
Just to name a few

I could talk of children's laughter
Or sailing on the sea
Or the peace I find just lazing
Or what I dream to be

I could ramble on for hours
And this rhyme would be so long
I could make it into music
So powerful and strong

Or I could simply talk of nothing
Which could never, ever be
If it could, though, would it let my mind
Finally be free?

From the ceaseless chatter in my head
Going on all day and night
In thoughts or dreams, it's endless
Fantasies bringing me to flight

I prefer to be a dreamer
The possibilities have no end
They can twist and curve so simply
So please won't an ear you lend?

Or really just give me your eyes
To read this silly little poem
I've opened up my mind
And to your eye I've shown

That off the cuff is fine
Naturally flowing with such ease
Off the cuff? That's enough?
This surely was a breeze

So i challenge you now loved one
To meet me like we've always done
But I won't let you off so easy
Your challenge? It's the sun!
