Of The Depression Poem by Javed Latoo

Of The Depression

'Of the depression'

When aquamarine skies look grey to our eyes
The stars no longer adorn the heavens or shine bright;
When the golden rays of sunlight disappear from the skies
The silver rays of the moonlight look like phantoms of the night.

When we feel imprisoned with no escape from this dark place
And dazzling beauty looks like an old wrinkled face;
When sorrowful eyes stare into a cold empty space
Oblivious of the loved ones; their beauty and grace.

In this period we are neglected by the angel of sleep
The taste of our favourite food is appetising no more;
When we are drained of the sap of life and tend to weep
And the brain cannot concentrate anymore.

That state when the mind tricks us to believe we are worthless
The heart is eaten by the bug of guilt over the trivialness;
When we are overwhelmed by hopelessness
All consolations about the future seem only fruitless.

When we no longer enjoy the company of our loved ones
Isolate from the things that we normally enjoy;
Overwhelmed by the feelings of being down in the dumps, once
Minor bumps become boulders difficult to navigate and destroy.

When our minds ruminate about the past and future, furthermore
Reassurances don't dampen the worrying cognition;
When life does not seem to be worth living anymore
And we start getting fleeting suicidal ideation.

Remember that this dark cloud of despair we feel
Is an ailment called depression and not a curse; and be aware
It is a transitory period rather than an everlasting ordeal
Treatment and recovery are available from the experts who care.

COMMENTS OF THE POEM
Bri Edwards 16 March 2015

this stanza may be the favorite i have read here, but certainly NOT because it is uplifting. i wonder if a depressed reader could even make it through the whole poem. it is like a spiral downward, until, FINALLY, the last stanza tries to show some hope! l That state when the mind tricks us to believe we are worthless The heart is eaten by the bug of guilt over the trivialness; When we are overwhelmed by hopelessness All consolations about the future seem only fruitless. i hope the Journal readers make good use of the poem. it is really wonder-full. in a depressing kind of way! i like that the nice rhyming added to, instead of subtracted from, the goodness of the whole. to MyPoemList it goes! bri :) ===================================== i offer my poem: Depression: Some Advice..... [A Reminder and A Warning To All, Depressed or Not] I suppose we all can have....a “bad day”, whether we’re at work or we’re at play. But on “bad days” there’s still stuff to enjoy, whether you’re a woman or man or girl or boy. Most of us still can walk; at forward motion our feet don’t balk. We still have enough teeth to eat a meal, even if some teeth are “false”, not real. Most can see the glorious sun and feel its heat, and most, when needed, have a toilet seat. We have fans to cool us when it’s hot, and heaters to warm us when it’s not. And for those few of you who STILL say “life’s a bitch”, you can often choose.....your own life to ditch. BUT think before you pull the trigger or cut yourself with knife, ‘cause, once you’re dead, you CAN NOT ……retrieve your life. - - - - - - - - - - - - PLUS: If you attempt suicide and fail, you may find yourself crippled and/or in jail. So be SURE you're sober and talk your problems out, even if you have to LOUDLY shout! (January 1+4, and March 15,2014)
