Of Lies And Deaths Poem by Unnikrishnan Sivasankara Menon

Of Lies And Deaths

Rating: 5.0

They have conspired
To annihilate me
Make me vanish
Without a trace.

Their saber found its target
My heart slashed open
When blood poured
And dyed me crimson
They hung me out
In the open bull-ring.
They were the matadors
Who guided the bull to me.
The vultures that picked up
The shreds of my flesh
Were them again.
And the talons
That tore into my heart
Were theirs too.
But the stain of blood remained
And spread everywhere
And left every soul
Contaminated.

They burned me at the stake.
They themselves were the stake
The embers and the smoke
And the flames that
Fed on my tallow.
But the ashes remained.
Swept by the wind
Of the whisper of my soul
It rained acid on every heart
And left them burning
Till this day.

The last of my deaths came
By poisoning.
They were the poison fangs
And the hood, the hiss
And the venom
That dyed me black
From head to the toes.
But Truth remained
Alive, bright and shining
So that they would
Swallow their lies
When the sun shines
Tomorrow.

I wish I could drink
From Lethe
And forget what
They have done unto me!

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

I am utterly intrigued by this piece. It is powerful, it carries a huge emotional impact but there is even a larger philosophical impact. This poem will not allow the reader to wander off and not ponder its words.10 +++++++++++++++++++++++++

The heart screams with this poem. Every word is a cry to rattle the soul. But I like to touch of light streaming in final words.

This poem speaks of the anguished cry of humanity from times immemorial. The tragedy is that it will never cease, for incurable is the wickedness of man, despite all the crucifixions and poisonings he has indulged in time and again. (10)

Oh! what a deep impression this poem produced upon me! It was as I felt forgiveness and resurrection! It becomes more strong thanks to the detailed description of murder. Oh that is what I always miss in Shakespear! There are death, murders, eveil but no LIGHT in the end. You surpassed Shakespeare in shining!

What a splendid piece! This one has made my day. Almost everyone has suffered some form of betrayal in life, often at the hands of people closest to us. The way you have dealt with the theme of betrayal is absolutely praise-worthy. It's as if the reader has travelled through times and found the curse of betrayal in every age. There's always a Judas in every age n in every place. I agree with Susan that this poem has a strong emotional impact n jolts the reader. The poet is speaking on behalf of whole humanity here. A perfect 10 for this poem.

Hi Nosheen, Thank you very much for the deep study of the poem. I appreciate your time spent on reading the poem and offering the detailed study. True, betrayal from a person close to you is the hardest to bear. Only a person who has gone through the times can fathom the agony. As you would appreciate Nosheen, betrayal has a history dating back to the days of Cain and Abel. It is a natural human tendency.
