Ode For The Road Poem by Ananta Madhavan

Ode For The Road

'Road-roller, O Road-roller", I holler.
"Get thee behind me or let me pass.
Smoothe the way, press down the humps."

That ponderous vehicle rumbled over bumps,
Leaving the road with pitfalls intact, alas.

We seldom pause to listen to ourselves.
Listening is more than hearing, which is the functioning of
our aural sense, when sound waves come to the ears and
the brain interprets them as noise or message. To listen is
to be fully involved with what we hear, an active participation
of the mind and emotive receptivity.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Smooth suburban traffic and order depend on
public cooperation plus civic efficiency. Streets
and bylanes are exhibits of both.
