Not So Friendly Persuasion Poem by Beecher Smith

Not So Friendly Persuasion

Little Sammy’s birthday clock
Would not make the sound “tick-tock.”
Instead it made the noise “tick-tack.”
Angry Sammy took it back.

The merchant who had made the clock
Was German, and a wise clock-doc.
In just a wink the noise was nixed,
Which pleased Sam that his clock was fixed.

Still Sam could not help but ask
How the merchant did the task.
“Dat’s my secret, ” said the Doc,
“We have our ways to make dem ‘tock’! ”

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem was inspired for a monthly contest of the Poetry Society of Tennessee, but it didn't win. It was revised and submitted into the Humorous Short Poetry Contest for the National Federation of State Poetry Societies for 2010 and won a Third Place in the national competition and was published in Encore Magazine. Ironically, the monthly contest sponsor who did not care for the poem originally happened to be the outgoing President of the NFSPS that year and was required to read the poem aloud to all in attendance at the 2010 Convention!
