No Snow At All Poem by Frank Avon

No Snow At All

Rating: 5.0

Let there be no snow
save in paintings
as by a window framed
in the palace of their love.

Let there be no snow
save for the crisp whites
in wafts of linen piled
over their warm afterglow.

Let there be no snow
on the lily of her breast
silken to his touch
or the stilling of his breath.

Let there be no snow
lest crocus again arise
between their warm thighs
and blossoms grow.

Let there be no snow
no, let there be no snow,
for love in warmth comes
and only warmth must know.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Growing out of a re-reading of Keats' 'La Belle Dame Sans Merci' and Lamia, a fairly explicit interpretation of what Keats had to keep more subtle. In fact, one of his publishers had required that he omit a stanza because 'women could not be subjected to reading it.' Cf. Dorothy Van Ghent's 'literary' or mythic interpretation of Keats' love for Fanny Brawne (Keats Mythic Imagery, published posthumously) .
