Nine Poem by Lora Cooley

Nine

I recall once how we paied such close attention
I should have stopped between empty buildings when the coast was clear
We throw our difference and urgent adolesence in a basement
Sharing sweat with stranger boys and girls

Nothing seems to change
Listen
If we just love in stuttered breaths

Have us smash bottles
Say we never knew
Our faulty pieces, our rusted parts, the petty imperfections that hearts write
Your named next to mine
Whispering
Find someone better
Find better
