Nevertheless

God commands, He never gives advice,
see heroism as an obligation, and rejoice
that never will alternatives entice
you from the “nevertheless” that is your only choice.

Inspired by a lecture given to the Jewish Studies Center by Professor Michael Myers on Rabbis Joachim Prinz, who was expelled from Germany in March 1937, and Leo Baeck, who survived Terezin and Auschwitz, never having abandoned the German Jewish community. Professor Myers said that Baeck once said: “God commands: God does not give advice.” He also said that it was the obligation of Jews to give “denoch” a voice. “Denoch” means “nevertheless.
