Nerga Part Ii (Intimate Strangers) Poem by Alfred Ramos

Nerga Part Ii (Intimate Strangers)

Her real name was Ana Maria
With skinny chicken bones arms
She literally died at the border
Of exhaustion-fear-loss of vision and will
In a barrio of intimate strangers
A tidal wave of human flesh
Wearing the same dull dress
With an odor of burning trash
We reconnected in the dumps of Tijuana
She flew into my arms like an angel with broken wings
She spoke precious lost secrets in my ear
She was now an expert a seeking dump treasures
She explains to me the key to survival
Back home to a one room shack with no light
Desolation hung like dirty curtains
But this was next to paradise to her
A kick to my the groin would be better to me
Her birthday was coming up
All she ever wanted was a new doll
A fellow worker donated $30.00 and she cried
Never removing the doll from its box
She did not go to school for lack of shoes
It represented a non-negotiable symbol of shame
I bought her a pair of black shoes
And in days they were stolen
By other needy dump rats
Two weeks later I bought her another pair
But she was expelled from school for non attendance
Weeks later she vanished into a smoke filled oblivion
(to be continued)
