My Voyage Poem by Venkateswaran Krishnan Sreenivasan

My Voyage

My voyage began on a stormy sea
Of penury, privation and want
My childhood days, however, glided in glee
Unscathed by the ghost of misery’s haunt

Though bereft of means to make both ends meet
I was blessed indeed to win a medical seat
On merit, and with laurels complete
The course for my chosen career to compete

Dreaming of a future with no eye on wealth
My medical career was full of cheer
By my dedicated care and God’s cure
My patients are restored to robust health

My profession brought me riches and gain
In status, esteem and fame without strain
My surplus wealth like heavenly rain
I shower on the needy to allay their pain

Looking past now from where I stand
Revokes mournful memories of my parents’ plight
Of struggling in agony for support and light
At the end of the tunnel, not near at hand

My journey has almost ended
After the storm, calm has descended
From heaven foreboding the end
Of my life, full and contended

For every forward step foreordained
By God, bounties bestowed or self attained
My heart flows in tides of gratitude
To lead me on the path of rectitude
