My New Driver Poem by nadia abduljabbar

My New Driver

I sold my semi knew
Camry car,
And kept the old one,
A Volvo that can not be
compared to any other
One,
In hope
To find spare parts
To fix it.

Drivers disappeared
All of a sudden in Jeddah.

I hire cars by a trip,
A bit more expensive,
But safer than limousines.

Abo Feras is the name
Of my New driver;
The same name
Of the famous poet,
But nothing he shares
With the poet except
The wish to help people.

He took me with my friend
Khadijah to ‘Stars Avenue’;
The only Mall I go to in Jeddah,
He knew she is originally
from southern Arabia,
So he said she is like me,
I said no people are not alike,
I am from Makkah,
But not all makkah people are the same,
I was afraid that he would
Consider himself a friend since
He is from the same land of my friend.

A good man but he tortures me by
His endless stories about people
And with his car or rather cart,
Every time I enter the car,
After saving me from the door
That could cut my leg,

He begins:
Did you hear about the big accident?
I say: No Abo Feras
And I do not want to listen
To stories about accidents.
Then, he adds, :
Do you know so and so doctor,
I reply: no Abo Feras:
I do not know her
I do not want to know Anything
About People’s life;

Every day I repeat the same lesson:
I retired Abo Feras because,
I do not want to see or listen
To many people; you see I am
Satisfied with writing Poetry
And with the Few people I know
And with
The 25 cats I keep
In my big garden,
But what will they do if you die?
Then God will take care of them,
But now I just can’t throw them;
They are so beautiful
And from a rare kind
And they are like my Babies.

Yesterday, he took me back
From the hospital in three hours,
Though the original distance is half an hour,
For I live in the outskirt
Of Jeddah,
He wanted to avoid the jam
Of the traffic made by an accident,
And here I was on my bed for
Five hours trying to relax my
Back from the effect
Of abo Feras Car or rather cart.
