My Little Jamie Poem by Hannah Hasenyager

My Little Jamie

Thoughts haunt my mind
What was alive is dead
And what is dead
Is only fleeting memory’s
That will only come
When I realize what I lost

This dust was life
The life I once lived
This dust was grass
And waters kiss
There were blue skies
And beautiful clouds

Oh the clouds
I remember my babe
Tell me what he thought
Of those white clouds

Oh my sweet Jamie
His blue eyes filled with wonder
He would point to the clouds
And he would say
“Momma that one is a bunny”
And I would smile at my sweet Jamie
Jamie would play in the pond
Laughing and screaming
Joy in his little voice
His Pa would laugh
And join him too

I miss the moments
That we three where together
Jamie swinging on a swing set
His Pa holding us
The sweet rain falling down
A smile on both their faces

But that was only a moment
A moment that is now gone
There are no clouds
That float around
Bringing happiness
To my little Jamie

My husband disappeared
Into a deep hole
Never to laugh again
My little Jamie asked me
Where he had gone
And I could never answer him

The pond dried up
Like the rest of the land
Leaving my Jamie
To play in the sand
He would smile sometimes
But his smile was different without Pa around

I hear the wind imitate
My sweet Jamie
I know he’s not there
The two graves
Behind the house
Tell me the truth

I sit alone on this porch
My mind is as empty as these fields.
I cannot help but curse this place
For all that has taken from
The dust in the sky
That made my Jamie die
