My Idea Of Independence In Modern India Poem by Pramod Pisharody

My Idea Of Independence In Modern India

What is independence for me?
Working from home forever, the only place to be.
Settling with and retiring from one company,
No more job ads, bonds, notice periods or multi-crore alimony!

Work is worship,
Fair compensation for all, without any hardships.

No dependency on parents or husbands,
Not just household errands,
All women need employment,
Not just mere words of empowerment.

Expenditures rising day by day,
Tax rebates need to be given on what you pay.

All insurances paid, no questions asked,
Ombudsmen to be stories of the past!

For all mobile numbers, electronic cards, bank accounts,
Passport, voter and tax account,
No multiple numbers and passwords, just a unique number,
The National Identification Number.

Gandhi left his mark on the nation,
But…no more hard currency, of any denomination!

Free education for one and all,
Open book tests in the examination hall.
Not just learning by heart,
Learning with practice, that's what creates fine art!

Vehicles running on electricity and gas,
No more promises for free pass.
Cycling too is a good exercise,
No more fuel price rise to surprise!

Millions of micro cameras here and there,
All offences tracked and instantly punished, everyone beware!

Water water everywhere, but not a drop to drink,
Use recycling technologies, than drain down the sink.
'Go green' for fuel and power generation,
A onetime investment, with everyone's co-operation.

Greenhouse effects and El Ninos doing nature's debits,
Its time humans too should get carbon credits.

Citizens need to be always safe,
Self-defense should be compulsory, not a sorry face.

India lives in villages,
Farmers deserve profit, not wages.

Well, there's a lot more to think,
Let's start off, and bring in the missing links,

The sun will always shine, no matter how much the clouds are dense,
The country has entered its 67th year of independence!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this poem as a part of the creative writing competition in my office, on the eve of the country's Independence Day celebrations. Its a collection of the various issues in life and society, and ways to deal with it, in my perspective. I should still call it a work-in-progress, and will refine it as more ideas flow in.
