My Husband: A Poem For Africa Poem by Elna Nel

My Husband: A Poem For Africa

I am dreaming of you
in silent distress-
speak to me
for words are alive
and love is a soldier
fit in gentle ways
of persuasion
and found in peace
like dew on a king's tongue
collect and drop
God can-
and He can
rise and bow to the south
a few drops of dew
to quench the fire
of desire in my heart
but my love for you
can never turn to hate-
look into my eyes
and free me
from cold disrespect
a simple dance I require of you
for africa's passion is a fruit
and water flows
from those shoulders
that turn a ballet of balance
into food like a dove
