My First Blessing Poem by Padmanabhan Ananth

My First Blessing

A score of years ago at our home town
When your mom's wheeled to labour room
Faraway, I entered my new job's interview room
I much missed your life's earliest moment!

But when you came out of Mumbai airport
Cuddling cosy-n-comfy in your baby blankets
Your teeny-weeny glances, grins-n-gurgles
Moments, of my life, they're the greatest!

When to a freak fall, you lost two tiny teeth
It pained my heart and deep inside, I wept
Now that your smile glows so beautifully
Pains of that fall's just a faded memory!

The eve I left you at law school campus
To manage all by yourself, far off our house
My cab left but stayed back my heavy heart
My mind muddled, cheeks by tears wet

Each itinerary for your coming back home
My mental clock'd commence countdown
And each day of your break and vacation,
Is no doubt one of joyous celebration!

It's great to see you a grown-up woman
When you're learning to be on your own
Be it for driving, shopping or travelling
Your confidence is, to me, so comforting.

You'd admit your sister is at her happiest best
When you're with her, each minute in such jest
To goad-n-guide, she needs you, none else
With 'Lamphi* Tunes', blow any of her blues!

At a firm or in-house, you'd soon be lawyer
Put your best at work, be you may, wherever
They say 'there's no substitute to hard-work'
I would back this, that one you mustn't shirk.

Say your prayer, care for your li'l sister
Live your long life, to the fullest further
No more sermons through these verses
My first blessing, be yourself, always!

Thanks Kavya for your feedback and views. Indeed children are the best blessings for a man/woman. Unfortunately sometimes, our mad lives make us miss the chance and then pine after they're out of our reach.
