My Finches Poem by Juan Olivarez

My Finches

I kept two tiny checkerd finches,
In a little cage.
This morning I fed them,
I watered them,
And hung the cage outside.
Like I have done,
A thousand times before.
Turning to talk,
To my son,
I heard a loud crash.
And turned just in time,
To see the finches fly,
Into a lime tree.
They stayed there,
A long time.
Looking sad and lost.
The world they had known,
Had come to an end.
I hope they will survive,
But with winter coming on,
I just don't know.
I love those little birds.
