My Father Is Different Poem by Robert Kraft

My Father Is Different

Some people have a father
Who will tend to them without a bother
Always willing to aid their happiness
Or protect them from any distress
My Father is Different
My father believes in learning life’s lessons the hard way
If I strayed from the herd I would surely pay
If I did not hold views like that of traditionalists
And instead preferred realists or transcendentalists
My deviance was not taken well
My ‘lesson’ would sting and swell
However, I now find comfort that that’s in the past
At least his control over me didn’t last
Yes, your father and mine may be as different as day and night
However, he is still my father and I have to love him, right?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
My father had some problems and used to take them out on us kids. We all made it out and turned out ok however it still haunts me somewhat as you can see in this poem.
