My Face - A Niqab Poem by Ila Sumam

My Face - A Niqab

The clear brow wisps
The smiling lips
The calm it shows
Are not my own
Those I've bought
Or rather, got
From a million plays
Simultaneously staged
Some of which
I must admit
Are in which (In fact)
I simultaneously act
My coarse hair whips,
They're puppet strings
That manipulate the slaves
Of the Pavlov brain
'Conditioned' to smile
When there are things to hide
to stop and cry
When I've failed(to try)
Not to show
What I don't know
Cause then, like ripping ham
They'll find who I am
Only my eyes
I call mine
As only they stare
With that helpless despair
So, If you don't
want another soul bombed
Don't try to probe
Beneath my face-A Niqab
