My Dear Friend, Sallie Jo Poem by Linda Engwall

My Dear Friend, Sallie Jo

When I first met you, long ago
I must confess I thought
How can anyone be this nice?
Nevertheless it has always been who you are

So many memories I have
Like when I had my first child, Sarah
You came to the hospital
With a little blue dress
Cause you understood why
Pink would never be my color
And I know how hard that was finding a blue dress
In a sea of little pink dresses

Like a never forgetting my daughters birthdays
They love you as much as I do
Always staying connected
even though we live far away from each other now

And I have to laugh
Do you remember when we would eat lunch
Together and everyday my friend,
You had a cheeseburger and fries
And then you would make this little pile ketchup with a ton of salt
I don’t believe you ever deviated from that menu

So many memories yet what I hold dear
To my heart
Is your heart
You where a friend before I was even
Able to understand what a gift that was

So for you my friend
I wish you this birthday and everyday
More laughter
More time with your favorite hubby
Some good wine
Family and friends
(and perhaps one day a visit to Pennsylvania to visit this friend)

Happy Birthday, Sallie Jo

Love you, Linda, Sarah and Angelica
