My Baby's Love Poem by Izzy Angelone

My Baby's Love

I pressed the number 2 button on the elevator,
My heart pumped and my stomach fluttered
As the reflective elevator door opened,
I walked towards a heavy brown door
The waiting room felt like a silent film
I signed in for the very first time on my own
I felt as if I was on a factory line,
waiting to be the next victim
As my name was incorrectly called,
I stood up and took a deep breath.
An expressionless nurse led me to my room
The hallway felt like an endless tunnel
As I sat down on the hospital bed,
I couldn't help but feel more nervous
The nurses took 8 tubes of my blood
After satisfying their bloody needs,
I walked down the dreadful hallway again
The next room was dim and small
A woman with white hair and round glasses asked me to lay down on a table
She poured steaming hot gel on my stomach
The screen's image looked like a cave
Once I saw my baby,
a smile spread from ear to ear
The joy of hearing my baby's heart beat filled my life with purpose
At that very moment, I felt happier than I had in a long time

The beating of the baby's heart sounded stronger than any heart I had ever heard before
Once the doctor saw every phalange and appendage,
I made my way back to the elevator,
My mother and boyfriend were silent,
But I felt as if the silence surrounding me was very loud
I thought about my baby as my mom drove me home
I always hated going to the doctor
But never in my life had I anticipated going to the doctor again to see my baby
