Music That Does Not Muse Of Hari Poem by Ravikumar C.P.

Music That Does Not Muse Of Hari

Kannada composition by Purandara Dasa
English Translation by C.P. Ravikumar

The rising of the moon
Does little to please the thief
The rising of the sun
Brings little joy to the woman of the evening
Likewise, the story of the Lord of the Goddess of Wealth
Does little to the one with a lowly life

Music that does not muse of Hari
Is like a song sung in desolation.
O Vithala of Purandara,
It holds the same beauty
As face of a beautiful blind woman

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Purandara Dasa was a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu. He says that mere ostentation will fetch little; what is needed is Bhakti.
