Mrs. Toad Meets Mr. Toad …. [toad Creation; Courtship; Humor; Short Enough] Poem by Bri Edwards

Mrs. Toad Meets Mr. Toad …. [toad Creation; Courtship; Humor; Short Enough]

Rating: 3.6

One cool and drizzly day
in the springtime month of May
a female Bufo met her match
while hopping in the berry patch.

Said Mrs. Toad to the big fellow
“Puff out your throat just like a bellows,
AND show me just how very far you can hop.
Keep going! I’ll tell you when to stop.”

Mr. Toad puffed out his throat indeed,
and hopped and hopped …. like a steed.
Mrs. Toad said then “I’m quite impressed.
You may now lead me to your nest.”

“My nest, you say? ” said Mr. Toad.
“I’m not a bird, or so I’ve been told.
If it’s babies you want, don’t you befuddle,
but hop with me to yonder puddle.”

There, Mrs. Toad, you should squat,
and deposit your eggs there. …………. A LOT.
Then I shall do what male toads must DO;
I’ll cover them with my sperms ……, like glue.”

“Why, Mr. Toad, don’t we need to join?
Don’t you need to press, against me, your groin? ”

“Heavens, NO! ” retorted old Mr. Toad.
“If you won’t do it the right was, hit The Road! ”

So Mrs. Toad, so as to not befuddle,
obediently hopped off to 'yonder puddle'.
SHE laid her eggs, and he did HIS part.
He did his part …., with all his heart.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
i was NOT drinking! i had not seen a toad in a long time, ....unless it was a small squished one on the pavement. who knows where this came from? ? ? [i MIGHT have been thinking of sex! ]
bri :)

P.S. my good PH friend, Valsa George, prompted me to check my facts about toad (Bufo, to be exact; the 'common toad') reproductive technique(s) . i still stand by my poem's words, BUT, little did i know EXACTLY what the technique is. here is what i found online:

''The males mount the females' backs, grasping them with their fore limbs under the armpits in a grip that is known as amplexus. The males are very enthusiastic, will try to grasp fish or inanimate objects and often mount the backs of other males. Sometimes several toads form a heap, each male trying to grasp the female at the base. It is a stressful period and mortality is high among breeding toads.[15] A successful male stays in amplexus for several days and, as the female lays a long, double string of small black eggs, he fertilises them with his sperm. As the pair wander piggyback around the shallow edges of the pond, the gelatinous egg strings, which may contain 3000 to 6000 eggs and be 3 to 4.5 metres (10 to 15 ft) in length, get tangled in plant stalks.[21]' '

...............OBVIOUSLY the author of this paragraph has been taught non-American spellings of 'fertilizes' and 'meters'. i guess i'll accept them in this international situation. :) bri

I love this funny poem about a quirky toad that has his own idea for how to reproduce. Another gem from the master of witty poems. My only thought would be to change: “Heavens, NO! ” retorted old Mr. Toad. “If you won’t do it the right was, hit The Road! ” to “Heavens, NO! ” retorted old Mr. Toad. If you don't do it my way, then hit The Road!

This is quite interesting! Is the content supported by scientific data......? Anyway the poem makes a humorous read!
