Mother Poem by David Pass

Mother

Unselfishly to love and care for another
From infant to an adult fully grown
To nurture and protect makes a good mother
To train and share with children of your own

Discomfort first with morning sickness – nasty!
And later back pain makes for nagging aches
Cravings for food – perhaps a Cornish pasty?
Then birth and first breath that an infant takes

Food, change nappy, and a brief respite of sleep
An unending cycle without a break
Baby’s movement and a smile, a giant leap
Learns to sit, first tooth, and much more awake.

Walking and talking, learning new things each day
Mother needed to both restrain and train
But also to love and comfort and to play
Sometimes in sunshine and sometimes in rain

The mother’s role changes with a child full grown
Less of a teacher and more of a friend
To a young adult with a home of their own
And then a Gran and a new child to tend
