Mother Poem by Roberto Echanes

Mother

Dedicated to my mum, Juana N. Echanes, and to all mothers of the world.

Ah mother! Sweet, tender mother,
Blessed art thou, O salt of the earth,
Sweeter than nectar,
loving mother of touch so tender.
Today’s your day to remember,
And how blessed are those
who still have mothers,
to hear those sweet words,
to feel such tender touch
which fills the heart
with amorous light.

Ah, loving mother!
Today you brought such mem’ries,
Of yester years that brought such tears,
O sweet reminiscences,
Of you mother so dear!
When in those painful years,
you gave loving care,
to this child who longs to hear,
your mellow song sang to my ears,
to assuage my fears,
and to fill my soul with cheers.

Ah divine mother!
I remember your tender eyes,
overflowing with so much love,
that soothed my broken heart,
and whispered in my ears,
sweet words of solace,
to calm my deep fears.
Ah my gentle mother!
to you I owe my life,
to you I owe my everything,
so in your day I offer this elegy,
to your loving memory,
that will remain for eternity.
