Moonlight Man Poem by Kay Hollister

Moonlight Man

He rides in the night,
Keeping to the shadows,
Why must he live in fear?

Deep inside he loves her,
Deep inside he needs her,
Yet, why does he act as if, he hates her?

He has not one regret,
Even though he has done terrible things,
He keeps to the shadows.

Behind he hears a stallion shreak,
Sending shivers down his spine,
He knows they are coming,
He knows it is his time.

Across the moonlit desert,
He rides his final ride,
Hoping to reach her and tell her,
She is the love of his life.

Kicking up dust behind him,
He rides into a town,
All is quiet it seems,
Even his horse seems to be galloping in air.

Tying the stallion to a post,
He runs to where he needs to,
A place where the truth must be told the most.

Silently he knocks on the window,
Does she hear his call?
She does and to the locked window,
She travels on tipped toes.

Her perfume and her gown,
make her seem a ghost,
this girl the Moonlight Man,
loves oh the most.

He tells her the words that must be spoken,
Then rides away again,
For he hears the terrible calls,
Of the angry men.

Into the shadows,
He merges as one of them,
Until they end,
Nowhere to go, again.

This time he cannot be saved,
His time he used,
His time he abused,
They grow closer.

A gun shot,
A young woman's scream,
A pool of red water.

Tonight is the night,
The Moonlight Man,
Has lost his final fight.
