Moonlight And Surrogate Rites Poem by Daegal

Moonlight And Surrogate Rites

Rating: 4.5

Seeing familiar names upon a
Stone, I grew frantic. Kneeling in the thick
Nettled grass, I carved away with bloodied
Nails, and etched instead my name. Then clawing
Sharp upon the floor, I took the wrongful
Person lying there, and brought them away
With me. In some weird ritual I
Gave each side a wing, and stitched it with my
Own soul. I gave the body strength and life,
And watched, heard the steady breath. When I saw
The silhouette against the silver moon
I rushed back to find that grave which I had
So recently defiled. I gathered up
My tools, and kissed the fleeing feathers which
Had disappeared and found some rapture now.
On finding the fissure, I threw myself
In, and with muddy hands I tore at the
Slack loam which I had stirred and pulled it down
To cover me. And lying there I choked
Upon what I had given to that voice.
In memory of the tender smile which
Now flew swift away from me, I smiled in
A strange content, and was crushed beneath my worship.

End.
