Moon'T Coat Poem by Ravikumar C.P.

Moon'T Coat

Hindi Poem by Ramdhari Singh Dinakar
Translated by C.P. Ravikumar

Moon approached his mother one day:
'I will request for a woolen coat, if I may!
Twelve months a year I go around bare!
My golden skin can't take any more wear! '

The mother could barely resist a smile.
Kissed his forehead and thought for a while.

'My darling, I understand your woe!
But what size should I get, I don't know!
Full one day, and then you begin to grow weak,
Disappear altogether in another week! '

For a second Moon's eyebrows were knit,
But soon on his face a large smile was writ.
When he spoke, there was a sparkle in his eyes
'I know! Get me fifteen, one for every size! '
