Modern Sonnet: ‘i Quit! ' Poem by Dr John Celes

Modern Sonnet: ‘i Quit! '

The time has come for me to say, ‘I quit! '
Have I not spent decades two in this place?
I toiled with dedication, zeal and grit;
Like most others, I can't just mask my face.

My honest work has not been recognized;
Most people here are not sincere at all;
The world around seems almost demonized;
Within my heart I hear a clarion call -

‘Get out of here for dignity's at stake'.
You cannot change the next in anyway;
The world abounds with more pretenders-fake;
Why waste my life and slog for paltry pay?

'Tis time to bid good-bye and move elsewhere;
Why fume and fret and cry when they don't care?
