Mistakes Are Portals Of Discovery

A man’s errors, said James Joyce,
are his portals of discovery,
although if we have the choice
we would rather our recovery
from our errors hide mistakes,
which though they help us to succeed,
painfully cause us heartbreaks
that we wish we didn’t need,
though apparently we do,
point once made by Ulysses,
not the book, but that man who
returned, though he had flunked on seas,
especially when meeting Circe,
mistake which was so very big
that if the gods had not had mercy
he’d have ended up a pig.
