Militant Understanding Poem by Jeff Law

Militant Understanding

You’re leaving soon, the friendship will be broken
I’m trying to work out what our last ever words were spoken
There’s a gaping hole, an ice box, I’m open and heartbroken
The luscious taste of what once was; now it has turned potent

I often rescue myself through words, my hearts become heroic
I always try to save myself using the fact I am a poet
But it was only you, my inspiration for whom I wanted to show it
So I hide this side of me so that now it’s only me who knows it

I find it hard to choose the words, my mind is so unclear
How can you sum up and write down in verses, the last two and a half years
I miss you now as time counts down; I’m trying to stay out of harm
But when the last of our seconds chime and stop, it will be a devastating alarm

I’m saying my farewells to all that mean something
I’ve taken a bold step to a hop, jog, skip, running
Now I’m running, it’s coming, the horizon is in vision
But that’s just the path for me after my decision

When we ended I hid and forgot about this side of me
It’s been a long time since I sat down and finally
Looked at what matters and looked deep down inside of me
Now I’m looking to the sky and building up my dynasty

You say I’ve moved on and forgotten about you already
You say I’ve made a new life; I’m going good and steady
You say to bring down memories of you; this feat is way too heavy
You guess you know what I am thinking, but you are no way ready

We barely meet and rarely talk; you’ve got your career planned
The boat we called the friendship, is no longer two men manned
We’re overboard and floating different paths, this I understand
But one day we may drift back into each other’s path, and get our feet back on land

The thought of these changes, it’s really upsetting
But these changes set my future, my lifestyles resetting
I will never look back, there’s no point in regretting
What will be of us in four years? I guess I’m still guessing
