Messing Up Poem by Linda Engwall

Messing Up

This I know I have done
Blame the “things” that have made me who I am
You know the ones that you had no control over
Brought up in a family undoubtedly like so many others
Patched together with parents going through their own pain
Never being able to really pay attention to the ones they brought into this world
Life brought them so much mess

Living life day by day
Responding to what came to them
Never, ever looking at the big picture
Too young,
Too ill equipped to ever fully understand
What they were doing

So you can have a child
What, does that really mean
Really not too much
If we are honest with ourselves

It is in the raising of this child that you do your good work
Cause if we get this wrong
We just keep perpetuating the cycle
I know we never get it complete right
We are human after all
But when are we going to pay attention to this the same way we do to important things
The damage we do if we don’t get it right
Keeps this wheel going around and round

I mean if I think about it
Why does this have so much less value
Cause I know in our hearts we don’t want to mess up with our children
The way we seemingly continue to do………….
