Menace To Society Poem by Christine Onwenu

Menace To Society

Rating: 4.0

Hello, hello
Is anyone here?
Why do I bother?
No one even cares
“I’m a menace to society”

They often whisper
I was influenced by older sister
Fighting on Mondays
Killing on Tuesdays
Drinking Kool-Aid
Brushing with Colgate

They think this is the typical week for me
But I’d prefer to writing up in a tree
I call and I yelp
Daddy, please help
They won’t let me go
Hush girl, you’re moving too slow

They stop and stare
People everywhere
“Oh, they’re putting on a show”
No way Jose

You’re far from right
I’ll take out my knife and we shall fight
Stop!
Calm down!
What’s going on?

Suddenly, a lady started singing a song
Familiar voice
I’ve heard it before
As if it were the woman from the second floor
Quit it! Cut it out!
They yell and shout

Girls you’re making a mockery
Everyone’s watching
You’re making a cacophony
I apologize

Don’t mean to laugh
But your face reminds me
Of an overgrown newborn calf
