Memorial Day Poem by John Shea

Memorial Day

I was a player of sports and was smart
My teachers were great

At eighteen I joined the corp
I was true to them and my family

Then in Iraq a blinding roadside flash
I felt no pain as my life ebbed like the tide

I looked down on the earth and saw mom and dad cry
I asked the angels why their pain
With tears in my eyes.

They said it's memorial day
As we flew away.
