Medicine In Poetry: Ode To The Fibre-Optic Endoscope Poem by Dr John Celes

With patient calmed by local spray –
Anaesthetic, that aids entry,
A tube that bends and twists and turns,
With optic fibres – Endoscope!

You peep through key-holes and discern,
The inner secrets of body,
And pass through lumen of all tubes,
Those naturally are found in man.

You aren’t a peeping Tom, all know!
But see the hollow viscera;
Perceiving inner live terrains,
To observe any changes fast!

Your black-raiment bears a head that moves
Giraffe-like into corners, nooks;
And shines a laser-light that’s cold
To view inside of cavities!

Thou fibre-optic bundled tube!
You bend the light that travels straight;
Tri-luminal within thyself,
Allowing instruments proceed.

An operation of less time!
You glide through throat, food-pipe, stomach;
To pry inside pathology,
As if it seems a child’s play just!

In cidex solution you stay!
You aspirate and irrigate;
Through port-holes you well operate;
All gadgets, you now dominate!

You can U-turn to view the sky
Of stomach’s fundus anytime,
And check the inlet, outlet too,
And snake down walls illumined well.

The price of using you isn’t much!
Results are captured in colour;
You bite and snare and diatherm,
Ligating bleeding varices!

Looking askance, end-on and side,
No landscape can escape your eye;
With mild a force, you then propel
To view inaccessible areas!

A doctor’s friend in diagnosis,
You help to take a biopsy;
And treat the lesion seen by you,
With ease and finesse adeptly!

O Endoscope so flexible!
You are the champion of today;
You serve to diagnose and to treat,
Situations tough to clinch and deal!
You have a rosy future, wow!
But all depends on man’s use now!
