Maya Angelou Poem by Freeyad Ibrahim

Maya Angelou

by Freeyad Ibrahim

Angelou was once sexually abused
by her mother's boyfriend, and raped
she told her brother…gaped
who told the rest of their family,
The man was found guilty
Wallowed in the crime, so filthy
but was jailed for only one day!
Justice then, a murdered conscience
the picture was not black and white
rather it was White or black
they were a flashback not a feedback
four days after his release,
the rape criminal was murdered,
probably by Angelou's uncles,
vengeance
Angelou became mute for almost five years,
believing, as she stated,
'I thought, my voice killed him;
I killed that man,
because I told his name,
and then I thought I would never speak again,
because my voice would kill anyone I name.'
according to Marcia who wrote her biography
it was during this period of silence
when Angelou developed her extraordinary memory
came with the wide world in harmony
with a passionate feeling, intense
her love for books and literature,
and her ability to listen and observe the world around her,
she began to look at it with insightful vision,
tense,
Proved worthily she is a Phenomenal Woman
Still, She Rises
with a dense intensive musical sense!
