Martin Said Poem by Tsunami HiroshiSu

Martin Said

Martin said, "I have a dream."
But what did that mean?
Did he want his children to go to school with us?
Did he want his children to play with us?
Of course.
And why shouldn't they?

Martin said, "Join hands around the world."
But what did that mean?
Did he want us to hold black hands?
Did he want us to stand beside Hispanics, Muslims and Gays?
Of Course.
And why shouldn't we?

Martin said, "Stand together."
But what did that mean?
Did he want us to stand as one?
Did he want us to become brothers to everyone?
Of course.
And why shouldn't we?

Martin said, "Accept all."
But what did that mean?
Did he mean we should be open-minded?
Did he mean everyone should be equal?
Of course.
And why not?

Martin said, "Integration."
But what did that mean?
Did he mean his children were turned away?
Did he mean they were hated and couldn't stay?
Yes.
But why?

Martin said, "Dry the tears from your black face."
But what did he mean?
Did he mean we were done?
That we have integrated and fulfilled his dream?
No.
But we have started.

Martin gave his speech.
But what was it meant for?
Did he mean to inspire?
Did he mean to bring us together?
Yes.
And he did.

Martin brought us together with his dream.
Martin inspired us with his scheme.
We are beginning to join our hands.
We are working to integrate our lands.
Yet some still say no.
But why?
