Mama Ben's Shop Poem by Kariuki Samuel Mutiga

Mama Ben's Shop

Infinite heights
Severe………..painful pangs
Watching the sun……
The sun fading away your precious time.
A dark night….
Where darkness shows its darkest face-
Heights of desperation

Watching the rain fall
Mightily from the heavens
……………fall to a rocky barren land
A land where-
Mothers cry,
Children die
-die of hunger
Heights of desperation.

Your efforts diverge,
While your rewards converge,
Your heart bleeds-
As fire of sulphur
Burns your hopes away
………….and you are possessed with-
Heights of desperation

You worked hard for your money
If you are not swimming…..
You are drowning –in it
But someone should have told you
Love and health aren’t bought
…………..as loneliness and sickness
Eats you away-and you fall into
………heights of desperation

I went to mama Bens shop
To ask the price of hope
You could bet with me
Because this is what she said
Not one
Not two
Not three
But free
Yes indeed
FREE thousand shillings
