Mailman Poem by Kevin Patrick

Mailman

Rating: 4.0

Under the feverish throbbing yellow sun
you stride the doleful sidewalks expertly
negotiating the long seigneurial streets
and neighbourhood capillaries mapping your route
Marching with well-worn military precision,
Well groomed to the lanes and boroughs you chart
Constantly combating sunburns and heat strokes
All in the pursuit to finish what you start

and the houses, monotonously aligned
all arranged in rows of near crew cut form
offer subtle textures from extroverted owners
small gardens, sand-witched with tiny plastic windmills
bungalows mixed duplexes sit with split levels
provide little remedies for carpal tunnel vision
as you stride in and out on the tip of the driveway
delivering daily dosage on your milk run expedition
and clutching your satchel of secrets
you stride filled with pride your life fills a purpose
Confided to the patch where know one will notice
President of your destiny and solitary heart

I'm unclear about the crucial closing lines of this poem What does the title PRESIDENT OF YOUR DESTINY AND SOLITARY HEART. You seem to be creating an heroic figure in the mailman, a maverick of sorts, who connects us to others through the mail but himself remains unconnected. He is dedicated and resolute. He sees his role as special so he lives a special life. That's what I see in this poem - in a modern world short on heroes, this mailman is living an heroic life and the heroism comes from within him. He's perhaps the cosmonaut of letter carriers.
