Lover Mother Lover Poem by stephen ifill

Lover Mother Lover

That day at the plaza, on the river's side,
My inner self, I tried, my best to hide,
Acknowledged, I did not do a good job, when
you smiled ever so pleasant,
I felt smitten with pride, just being at your side,
Your manner so assured, your ever so friendly smile,
The twinkle in those eyes, I thought, maybe shy,
Far from it girl, wasn't I wrong,
A true African woman, you've proven, oh so strong.

As we walked down the aisle, on that memorable day,
Standing side by side, brimming with pride,
Heads way up in the sky, but then again,
Big men are not supposed to cry,
A teardrop did fall, it came from the sky,
Yea' right,
It landed between us, maybe sent from on high,
Blessed were we as we exchanged our vows,
It wasn't on Facebook, it was pure African love,
The kind that we've shared, with all whom we love.

Two beauties we've brought forth, one for you, one for me,
We'll guide them through the good times, and the challenges of the bad,
True, it's not like it used to be, when life was much simpler for you and me,
But we're sure of our commitment to our family,
We made a vow to raise them in the eyes of the father above,
Obstacles will be in their paths, but we'll ensure in their hearts,
there's true, true love,
When they set out to make it in life, our one wish would be,
that they keep God in their hearts,
Nia, the great scientist; Zindzi, the renowned artist, who knows?
Whatever must be, must be,
What is important, we know, is that true love reigns in our African family.
