Love That Never Was Poem by Harlan Simantel

Love That Never Was

i think you knew i loved you
but i was bit too old
others better looking
myself by me am told

i made mistakes, stumbled
so awed by looks and youth
but honesty has always been
my aim - freedom by seeing truth

i knew you didn't love me
it shown in face and eyes
so i gave up and let you go
to him you loved so quickly
a christian virgin's prize

the heart can fool, pretend
that i had found 'the one'
but daylight comes and the sun
reveals another's heart
from mine a gaping chasm
millions of miles apart

how your life went married to him
so long ago i'll never know
we parted like strangers

an on with life i go
