Love In Contention

When everything was quite sweet
and we would both kindly meet;
it was such a joy to see you then
as we were together yet once again.

But as things have all since turned sour
we both don't look forward to the hour
that may come for each other to greet
and so we find some excuse not to meet.

This has been going on for quite a while
and it doesn't do much to raise a smile
which before was our accustomed case
the main feature seen on each other's face.

If we could only just turn things around
and perhaps find some common ground
then we shouldn't have too much to suffer
and our mutual love would act as a buffer.

When seeing into another person's eyes
we don't always detect confounded lies
if they're hidden there beneath the surface
which would be defeating our life's purpose.
