Love Bullet Poem by Chaz Walker

Love Bullet

I’ve been struck by the bullet of love
Like a torpedo in a sandstorm;
A firefighter swallowed by backdraft

Twisted kindly in a flash-bang
Of memories, where truth is a rouse
For invisible dreams to occupy!

Am I alive? I perceive, so I can fly.
Is this a 3D movie, or
A memory stitched in rhyme?

I catch half of your dragonfly smile
On a road trip heading west to the Rockies!
It’s sundown. Late 20th century.

Your eyes are dark, deep as corals, parallel
To the dusty horizon. The world is large
As the future. The stars are bright as the past.

The fibers of my heart magically shred when you
Sing Phantom of the Opera in the key of F.
Slow down. You’re driving too fast!

Are we in a space shuttle, or your dad’s pink corvette?
It really doesn’t matter. You’re beautiful as God.
Let me know when you’re ready to applaud.

Unless, you didn’t hear me. My chest
Is a base drum pounding. Where am I?
Pinned beneath the stairway to heaven?

No. A lion rises out from the smoke.
Tonight, you are fast asleep
In my arms.
