Longest Night Poem by Nassy Fesharaki

Longest Night

Longest night

I cannot remember the details so let's share
Few parts of long night; the longest
We as kids felt shortest

Theater:
This is scene
Far in the left corner there's Korsi
It is cold and winter; snow-ice

Korsi is four legged; is wooden; short table; square
Manghal is a metal or clay container; holds fire
It is filled and with ash, it's covered

On the top is lahaf; all around mattresses
Cotton filled are Toshaks; top's quilt
Soft warmness underneath is drug
Baleshes or pillows cylindrical

Memories of Day-Mah
Longest night called "Yalda"
People come, uncles, aunts
Kerosene-filled Lampas
All lighted on the Raf
On Taghcheh
On Korsi Majmaeh
(Huge tray)
Children; we played.

In center of the room, almond-bags
Stone bowl; are mortars, pestle-less
Instead long stones are chosen as hammers
Dried fruits, roasted crops; apple-quince
On the walls of the room dance shadows with flames; in all shapes
And smoked glasses; walls, ceilings and lanterns
Everyone's hand's busy; palms are filled with almonds
Shells break; opium-dark kernels fall
Elders talk, drink tea
We play and forget where to sleep.
