Drawn to the halcyon heat of
His smile
And the blinding light
that is his laughter
I soar
Beyond what I know
Is best
Hearing muffled voices
Way down in the valley of reason
Calling for me to come back
Descend to an altitude
Which saves me from the threat
Of having my wings melt
Leaving me to the sudden spiral
Like Icarus
Stupid in his love for the sky
Blue as his eyes
I did place quotation marks round *lift* and *the lift of you* but this site removes them for some reason... jim
I love the lift* of your heart. And I agree with your placing of reason on a lower plane/place. I'll be back to read more when time allows. Inspiring bio. *was reminded of one of Ron Dragano's on here... it ends with the lift of you. but I can't recall the title.

This is an admirable poem that derives from but doesn't depend upon the ancient story. You have eliminated the narrative details of Cretan vs. Athenian politics and opened up the story to describe the life of the individual who is pursuing her own fulfillment. It involves risk-taking which she fearlessly assumes, but the forces of conformity prove to be too strong. I love your description of the speaker's risk-taking (I'm paraphrasing) STUPID LIKE ICARUS/EYES BLUE LIKE THE SKY. This must show she will try again for the FREE LIFE!
