Life Is A Piece Of Cake Poem by Alfred Ramos

Life Is A Piece Of Cake

One day I woke up crying
(Have you ever done that?)
Of course it was the first day of my life
I didn’t recognize anyone in the room
Not ever the woman who had given birth to me
And soon I had a cozy spot
Cradled between two succulent breasts
I said to myself, life is a piece of cake
One day I went next door to play with my friends
Only no one was home except their older sister
She offered milk and cookies and of course I said yes
Then she grabbed me by the cheeks and kissed me
I said to myself, life is a piece of cake
I grew up tall and handsome
Well I might be embellishing a bit, I’m not tall
Girls were always calling
Everything seemed so easy
I seemed to pass every test
I said to myself, life is a piece of cake
One day I received greeting from Uncle Sam
He was going to help me see the world
He fed me, trained and shuffled me here and there
He disciplined and educated me
And in the end he helped me save my life
I said to myself, life is a piece of cake
One day I met the love of my life
Or so I thought, she left me for another
As I was falling someone caught me
Took me by the hand and led me to the alter
She gave my life a new breath, a new direction
And four beautiful children
I said to myself, life is a piece of cake
Then real life started, the 9 to 5 grind
Raising a family, paying the mortgage
Waking up at all hours of the night
Changing diapers, making bottles
Teaching the 3 R’s, manners and respect
Pulling teeth, mending scrapes, and drying tears
And on and on and on
Who said life is a piece of cake?
Then like a merry-go-round life spun so fast
The children grew and left
The hair disappeared
But the smile on my face never disappeared
I had a firm foundation to stand on
I had fallen and gotten back up
I had strayed and got turned around
I face the golden years with plenty of dreams ahead
I still say to myself life is a piece of cake
But what has made it so
It was friends, family, hard work, teachers, and education, books, dreams, inspirations, and never quitting
All these ingredients are the recipe to making life a piece of cake
