Life Begins At 40 Poem by mariam khan Farah Abdulahi

Life Begins At 40

People often say that life begins at 40
When I became 40
I could not believe
People started to say my writing, spelling & maths had improved
I thought people were joking
Just messing with me
Then one day I decided to go back to school
All ready doing D.I.Y.
I took computers, English & maths
To my surprise
Where I had failed 10years ago
I really was improving
My daughter had shown me some things on the computer
In my class I was picking up really fast
I went from beginners to intermediate in only a few months
My spelling had improved
I started writing poetry for my sisters at the mosque
I got my 2nd D.I.Y. Certificate
I’ve taken an English exam & due to take my maths exam
I suddenly had energy
Was getting high on life
Then at 41
I did a 12 mile walk for the children of Gaza
Due to do a 10k run for the British Heart Foundation
Still high on life & full of faith
I do the things I do
Travelling to Kent & Northampton
Almost every other week sorting family
Doing my classes almost every day
Mosque class on Saturday
Cleaning & setting up my Tea’s, snacks & charity pots at a mosque on Sunday
The other night when I was asleep
I had a dream I was in a race
It was not the 10k I’m due to do
As I tossed & turned
I awoke knowing what to do
High on life & full of faith
I went on the internet
I found that race
As I heard my family calling me
In my dream it said let your feet do the talking
To my surprise that’s what it said when I went on line
6 days after the 10k race
Not long I thought
As I had heard my family calling me in my dream
I knew I had to go still high on life & full of faith
6 days after the 10k race
I’ll do another race
For the children of Gaza
Insha-Allah
So as you see life for me really began at 40
