Liberal Arts Poem by Indigo Hawkins

Liberal Arts

outside my window
around an accordion,
carousers frolic.

though the floors are tile,
a vacuum next door rumbles.
I think of babies.

on the mirror ledge,
free condoms have been strewn to
encourage safe sex.
also, dental dams and lube.
while brushing my teeth, I stare.

the atheists dance
awkwardly in hospitals
but still sing the hymns.

the assumption is:
you have rolled a cigarette.
sushi works the same.

all buildings are stone
because everyone loves trees
except chainsaw crew.

cozy and quiet,
the library is a place
people come to sleep.

luminous-eyed owls,
chosen of Athena, we
sit in trees and hoot.

vacant showers plus
empty laundry rooms equal
stinky undergrads.

no one ever shaves.
everyone has beards or dreads,
not excluding girls.

a mob of sixteen
parades behind a fiddler.
I love my college.
