Lessons remain unlearned
though the understanding
is acknowledged
experiences repeat
and repeat and
will continue to
repeat
until the lesson is learned
but until then
you remain locked
in the maze of insanity
expecting something different
after every turn
yet ending up
in the same place
searching for that
piece of peace pie
in the midst of known chaos
being called upon
to engage in combat
for those who appear
helpless to help themselves
who gladly give
their power away
so that blame does not
look them in the eye
and condemn them
for their inaction
crises after crises
rescue after rescue
yet no one really says
thank you
and the lesson remains
unlearned
by both you and those you rescue
you who take on
the problems of the world
guardian Angel playing
modern day messiah
scape-goated and crucified
once the crises has passed
yet you feel
you deserve every lash
and every beat of
the verbal nails in your soul
for perceived crimes
committed for survival
you prefer penance
rather than accept absolution
believing forgiveness
is not in the stars
for you
yet the piece of peace pie
you seek waits
on the very edges of chaos
for the storms of others’ lives
to calm
and you to come down
from the cross and walk
the chasm of faith
leaving behind
the burden of responsibilities
that are not your own
laying aside blame
that was never yours
to shoulder
the lesson to learn is:
where your beginning and ending is
the border of your Self
separate from all others
that all chaos
is not yours to shoulder
and not every battle
is yours to fight
it is in teaching those
you defend and protect
to defend and protect
themselves
that the chasm is breached and
the piece of peace pie
you crave so dearly
is yours to be had
