Lessons In Love – A Valentine’s Tale Poem by Susy Evelyne

Lessons In Love – A Valentine’s Tale

I wonder what happened to R…?
He soon quit me when I wouldn’t go as far -
or as fast - as he wanted.
Leaving teenage me crushed and daunted
as we passed and he meanly flaunted
my instant replacement on his arm –
the stunner with voluptuous charms!

But looking back – oh relief!
He was a charmer, a fickle thief
of hearts.
It was in his plan that we would part.
Our Valentine's embrace on an escalator
would mean nothing to him two days later.
And all the sweet words he wrote and said
were romantic clichés he’d just read.

Lessons in love – we learn them hard.
Lesson one:
Beware the big, soppy, padded Valentine’s card!

Susy, I love this wise tale. To find true love it is so important to recognise when love is not true and not be swayed by things that are shallow.

Great write and great message! My favorite stanza is But looking back – oh relief! He was a charmer, a fickle thief of hearts. It was in his plan that we would part. Our Valentine's embrace on an escalator would mean nothing to him two days later. And all the sweet words he wrote and said were romantic clichés he’d just read.
