Leah The Beautiful Poem by Francis Duggan

Leah The Beautiful

Leah a name she adopted Leah was not her first name
And in the Country she came from she is an object of shame
She chose Leah because she liked it and that's the name she now goes by
And she came here as an exile and as an exile she will die.

In her very broken English Leah ventures to explain
Why she can't go back to China never to go home again
She say's I'm one of the thousands who strove for democracy
And if I did go back to China they might jail and torture me.

She is one of the brave students who protested in Tinnamen square
And when the soldiers fired their bullets Leah the beautiful was there
She escaped death or major injury by throwing herself upon the ground
She heard moaning and she heard screaming and bullets whistling all around.

Dark haired, brown eyed and without makeup and only twenty eight years old
And such a warm and friendly person and quite lovely to behold
Leah the beautiful from Bejiing is a woman I admire
She fought for human rights and justice and her story is one to inspire.

A political refugee from Asia in this country she will stay
And she can't return to China to her Homeland far away
She is one of the brave students who strove for democracy
And was forced to flee her Country and become a refugee.
